SABIC’s Jubail-based manufacturing affiliate, Al-Bayroni, has become the first entity in Saudi Arabia to achieve United Nations carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) scheme for its project, Efficiency Improvement by Boiler Rehabilitation in Fossil Fuel-Fired.

Another SABIC manufacturing affiliate, Yansab, has successfully registered a pioneering energy efficient manufacturing process at its complex in Yanbu as part of the CDM scheme.

SABIC has been notified by the National Committee for Clean Development Mechanism, Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources, that the carbon credits for Al-Bayroni will be issued by the UN body later this month.

The UN CDM scheme, which encourages reduction of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change, is highly complex in nature and requires technical and sustainability expertise, adherence to transparency, high EHSS and sustainability standards.

Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, who chairs the National CDM Committee and champions climate change and energy efficiency in the Kingdom, has expressed his appreciation to SABIC for these landmark achievements. In a letter to Yousef Al-Benyan, SABIC Vice Chairman and CEO, Prince Abdulaziz said, “The committee appreciates the tangible efforts and cooperation shown by SABIC in registering these projects and other similar efforts with the committee as national contributions submitted to the UN Secretary for Climate Change.”

Commenting on this pioneering accomplishment, Al-Benyan said, “SABIC is proud of being the first in the Kingdom to achieve carbon credits and register a groundbreaking energy-efficient process. We have once again demonstrated our commitment to sustainable development, clean environment and a better tomorrow, in line with the Saudi Vision 2030.”

Fahad M. Al-Battar, President, Al-Bayroni, said, “I am thankful to the Al-Bayroni team for this sustainability milestone. Despite the high level of UN standards and requirements, our team has risen to the challenges, doing all of us proud.”

Osama Bashaikh, Yansab President, said, “This achievement is testimony to the high quality of our sustainability, operational and EHSS standards. I am indeed proud of the commitment and professionalism of my team.”

After two meticulous audits, the UN issued 53,000 tradable financial instruments called carbon credits to match 53,000 tons of verified greenhouse gas emission savings achieved in the first year of the Al-Bayroni CDM project.

The CDM mechanism puts the project proponents under local and international scrutiny through a series of public consultations and third party audits. Since 2010, the UN has registered only six projects in Saudi Arabia but until now, none has succeeded in proving actual greenhouse gas emission reductions through a UN verification audit.
