Over the course of the next month, hundreds of thousands of football fans will descend onto Doha for this year’s World Cup to watch their favorite teams compete in the largest sports competition in the world.

This year’s tournament in Qatar is the first in history to be held in the Middle East and Gulf regions. Because of the unique climate in the region, local companies were sought out to partner with in the development of its infrastructure to ensure that the stadiums could withstand factors that were not barriers in previous tournaments.

For example, developers of Al-Janoub Stadium in Qatar, where spectators from around the world will be watching matches, required a material strong enough to withstand extremes of temperature and weight and SABIC had just the solution.

Coastal Trading & Engineering Company, the manufacturing firm contracted to manage this project, sought out SABIC’s polypropylene impact copolymer that – due to its flowability, colorability, weatherability, and durable resistance to solar irradiation – made it an ideal solution for the material for the seating.

After a detailed evaluation process, SABIC® PP 49MK45 was selected to manufacture the extremely rugged spectator seats and production began to complete the project.

However, this is not the first time that products from SABIC have supported and strengthened the infrastructure at a major football tournament.

In 2010, SABIC’s high-performance LEXAN™ polycarbonate sheet was chosen to create the roofing, façades and stairway glazing for the stunning new Soccer City Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg.

In 2014, its lightweight, high-impact and UV-resistant Lexan™ polycarbonate materials were chosen to create 53,620 m2 roofing and façades of four of Brazil’s stadiums, including two participating in the 2014 World Cup.

And earlier, in 2008, LEXAN™ sheet was used for state-of-the-art roofs of four renovated or newly built stadiums to shelter fans at the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 2008).
