Two material technologies from our Specialties portfolio – aimed at advancing the 5G and Electrical Mobility markets - have been shortlisted as finalists in the Mechanical / Materials category of the prestigious R&D 100 Awards.

The R&D 100 Awards is a renowned worldwide competition, which recognizes exceptional new products or process technologies that were developed and introduced into the marketplace during the previous year. Its 59th edition has received entries from 17 different countries. Finalists were selected by a judging panel which included 50 well-respected industry professionals across the globe.

Highlighting the opportunity which has been presented to SABIC, Ernesto Occhiello, our Executive Vice President, Specialties, said: “At SABIC, we thrive in our spirit of ingenuity. Being shortlisted amongst the top technological inventions reflects the excellent work of our scientists in delivering innovations that matter to society and meet today’s demand for better connectivity and powering electric vehicles”.

The first shortlisted solution, our cutting-edge ELCRES™ HTV150 dielectric film, delivers self-healing properties that support the design of high-voltage, high-temperature DC link power capacitors. These are able to store large amounts of electrical energy in vehicles for long periods without significant leakage of current or loss of charge.

Also shortlisted for its pioneering 5G applications, our High-Purity SD1100P Specialty Dianhydride improves metal adhesion in printed circuit boards and increases their reliability. It also permits the use of thinner, smoother copper – which decreases part size while enhancing signal transmission performance.

Occhiello added: “Moving forward, we will continue solving our customers’ challenges by pushing the boundaries of unique chemistries, and supporting new formulation and application development capabilities.”

According to R&D 100 Awards organization, the 2021 R&D 100 Winners, as well as the Special Recognition category medalists, will be announced by mid-November.
