LNP™ Compounds
For more than 70 years, LNP compounds have added value to automotive applications. Today, their specialized properties target current OEM and consumer requirements such as luxurious aesthetics and noise reduction for a better driving experience, thermal management for higher performance in EV batteries and lighting, EMI shielding to protect wireless electronics and ADAS sensors, and RF absorption for higher accuracy of radar units.
In addition to continually improving the performance properties of LNP compounds, SABIC is focusing on increasing the sustainability of these materials. The portfolio now includes LNP ELCRIN™ iQ resins, which are based on PBT and produced from chemically upcycled PET water bottles; bio-based LNP THERMOCOMP™ compounds made with feedstocks derived from waste or residue; and ELCRIN iQ grades containing mechanically recycled glass fiber.
Other LNP compounds that support environmental goals include LNP VISUALFX™ resins with molded-in colors and effects, which avoid the need for secondary painting associated with harmful VOCs; and LNP LUBRILOY™ and LNP LUBRICOMP™ grades that can replace PTFE with other internal lubricants to improve wear resistance.
LNP compounds also continue to play an important role in the industry’s perennial light-weighting efforts by replacing heavier materials like metal. Like all thermoplastics, they offer design and processing advantages over traditional metal and thermosets.
Featured Product Families
LNP THERMOCOMP compounds |
Available in 25+ base resins and with flame retardant and reinforcing additives, these compounds offer enhanced stiffness, heat and chemical resistance; tunable Dk/Df; and dimensional stability that support the development of ADAS housings, molded interconnects and structural solutions that require low warpage and light-weighting. |
LNP THERMOTUF™ compounds |
These compounds enhance base resins with excellent impact resistance, stiffness, heat resistance, weight-out and dimensional stability. They address challenges of mechanical shock, high temperature and chemical exposure. |
LNP LUBRICOMP compounds |
By incorporating internal lubricants, these compounds improve wear resistance, durability and reliability of under-hood moving parts, and can reduce buzz-squeak-rattle (BSR). They can be reinforced with glass and carbon fibers. |
LNP LUBRILOY compounds |
These tough, high-impact alloy compounds feature proprietary lubrication technology that provides wear and friction performance comparable to PTFE lubricants. Potential applications include moving parts requiring enhanced durability and reliability and reduced BSR. |
LNP STAT-KON™ compounds |
To help mitigate static buildup or discharge, these compounds incorporate electrically conductive additives offering a range of surface resistivity, from anti-static through conductive to EMI shielding. Potential applications include ADAS radar absorbing plates and fuel handling parts. |
LNP FARADEX™ compounds |
These materials provide inherent EMI/RFI attenuation using electrically conductive stainless-steel fibers to support consistent performance and avoid secondary coatings and fabrics. Potential applications include ADAS rear housings, electronic control unit (ECU) housings and windshield-mounted toll boxes. |
LNP KONDUIT™ compounds |
These materials are 10x to 50x more thermally conductive than unfilled thermoplastics. By conducting heat into a heat sink or the surrounding air, they help extend product life. They are well-suited for automotive applications requiring thermal management, such as battery modules and ADAS components. |
LNP VISUALFX resins |
These materials feature the latest colors and special effects, which are formulated in the pellet to avoid the environmental impact, time and costs of secondary painting. They are good candidates for interior and exterior parts requiring superior aesthetics, light management (hidden-until-lit) and paint avoidance. |
