Exteriors

Automotive OEMs face multiple – and sometimes conflicting – requirements in producing exterior parts such as fenders, spoilers, mirror assemblies, trim, fuel tank flaps and charge ports. Consumers demand trendy styling and aesthetics, such as illuminated signage to replace front grilles in EVs, a high-gloss surface appearance and the latest colors. Designers need to integrate components like sensors and antennas into exterior parts for better performance and aerodynamics. Meanwhile, business goals of system cost reduction, increased sustainability and additional weight-out require new solutions.

SABIC’s Specialties business offers materials that can help OEMs improve exterior aesthetics and support new designs while reducing system costs through processing efficiencies. Replacing paint with molded-in color capability is a key strategy. SABIC’s NORYL GTX™ resins and LNP™ SLX copolymers can be formulated with colors and special effects inherent in the pellet. Molded-in color can lower costs by eliminating secondary operations and protect human health and air quality by avoiding volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during painting.

To further improve sustainability, customers can select SABIC’s LNP™ ELCRIN™ copolymers, bio-based ULTEM™ and NORYL™ resins and other specialty materials that incorporate post-consumer recycled or bio-based feedstocks. Weight savings from replacing steel with thermoplastics can improve fuel economy, reduce carbon emissions and extend EV range.

For designers, SABIC’s materials offer greater flexibility to achieve goals such as part integration (lighting, ADAS, spoilers) and aggressive styling compared to metal and glass.

Added to all these benefits are the outstanding performance properties of SABIC’s materials— weatherability, impact, chemical and corrosion resistance, dimensional stability—paired with processing flexibility using methods such as overmolding and thin-wall molding.

Featured Product Brands

LNP™ Copolymers

Specialized copolymer resins, which link two or more different monomers in the same chain, offer superior performance and specific advantages vs. standard resins like PC in demanding applications

NORYL™ Resins

Modified PPE resins featuring high stiffness and strength, and good hydrolytic, chemical and creep resistance

NORYL GTX™ Resins

Modified conductive and non-conductive PPE resins with polyamide offering dimensional stability, low density and good hydrolytic, chemical, temperature and creep resistance

LNP™ ELCRIN™ Resins

Materials based on varying percentages of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content to help reduce their environmental footprint

Front-end Styling: Grilles & Faceplates

Front grilles allow OEMs to differentiate their vehicles with a signature style. LNP™ SLX copolymer resins can help designers achieve desirable quality and visual / aesthetic appeal along with excellent weatherability. Molded-in color capability removes the need for painting and associated VOCs, helping to reduce system costs and improve sustainability. LNP SLX resins are RF / IR transparent to support ADAS sensor integration in the front end and can be processed with other resins using two-shot molding.

Featured Product Families:

LNP™ SLX Copolymer Resins

are weatherable PC copolymers that react with UV light to form a self-renewing UV-resistant layer and offer long-term high gloss, color depth, and good thermal and impact performance for potential use in grilles, A/B/C pillar covers, appliques, mirror shells, spoilers, emblems and fog lamp bezels/covers

Charging Port Doors

EV charging port doors are evolving beyond the standards for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. They are larger due to the larger size of the connector port vs. the ICE nozzle insert, and incorporate more electronics, such as electromagnetic latching systems and potential connector sensor indication lighting around the port. Some automakers are relocating the charging port of passenger vehicles from the driver’s side to the front or rear (e.g., Hyundai Kona and Kia EV6, respectively) and are also changing the port location on commercial vehicles.

SABIC’s conductive NORYL GTX™ resins can replace metal in these parts to provide design freedom, opportunities for part and function integration, lightweighting and system cost reduction by avoiding secondary operations such as painting.

Featured Product Families

NORYL GTX™ Resins

are modified conductive PPE resins with polyamide offering dimensional stability, low density, and good hydrolytic, chemical, temperature and creep resistance. Besides charging port doors, potential applications include tank flaps, door handles, mirror shells and body panels.

Wheel Inserts & Covers

Stylish wheel covers/hubcaps and inserts offer designers – and consumers – a way to differentiate vehicles with attractive aesthetics. From a practical standpoint, inserts can deflect air into braking systems to improve air flow, while wheel covers protect against dust, sunlight and other environmental hazards. SABIC’s NORYL GTX™ resins can provide high temperature and impact resistance, dimensional stability and paintability, and feature a low specific gravity for weight savings. LNP SLX copolymer resins offer molded-in color capability to avoid painting, as well as a high-gloss surface.
