Smart Panels
Particularly for electric vehicles (EVs), automotive designs are moving away from front grilles, freeing up significant space for smart panels offering dramatic visual effects including unique lighting signatures and OEM branding elements. Front smart panels can also integrate camera, radar and LiDAR sensors to improve aesthetics while ensuring signal transparency. Smart panels are also being implemented in the rear of the vehicle, where they can integrate with lighting elements, liftgates or tailgates, and bumpers.
Materials used in smart panels require excellent transparency for optimized light and signal transmission, impact and high temperature resistance, weatherability and UV stability, and high-quality aesthetics. SABIC’s extensive portfolio for smart panels centers on LEXAN™ polycarbonate resins, which deliver glass-like clarity in colorless and colored options, as well as higher impact than acrylic and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Coatings and additives enable LEXAN resins to resist weathering, UV light and abrasion.
The SABIC portfolio also includes CYCOLOY™ PC/ABS resins for blackout areas using 2K molding with LEXAN resin, and SABIC® PPcompound for bumpers and housings that integrate with smart panels.
