SABIC® PP compounds: Automotive Thermoplastic Solutions from SABIC
The automotive industry’s ongoing focus on weight and cost reduction continues to drive demand for affordable materials that can provide a high stiffness-to-weight ratio. For example, as electric vehicle (EV) battery systems become larger and heavier and are integrated into the vehicle body structure, OEMs need cost-effective alternatives to metal that deliver excellent structural performance (balance of stiffness and impact) while minimizing weight to extend range and improve performance. The same properties, combined with excellent chemical resistance, are also valuable for other structural applications, from front-end modules to instrument panels and under-hood parts. Still another application area for high-stiffness polymer materials is exterior and interior trim, which requires good aesthetics.
SABIC PP compound (PPc) materials, together with SABIC’s design and development expertise, provide solutions for all these applications. They feature low density and foamability for weight-out, short glass fiber or mineral reinforcement for stiffness, good chemical resistance and cost-efficient processing. This portfolio includes grades with non-halogenated flame retardance for EV battery parts such as module housings, covers and trays, emission-optimized grades to reduce odor in interior parts, and products with a low-gloss surface for decorative trim.
