Exteriors
SABIC has a proven history of delivering innovative solutions for automotive exterior applications, including many OEM approvals for our materials. Our portfolio of 130+ grades for automotive exteriors, comprising low-density polypropylene/thermoplastic polyolefin (PP/TPO) materials and engineering thermoplastics, provides economical solutions for the entire body exterior: bumpers/fascias, body panels, roof modules, spoilers, grilles, EV front panels and trim components.
Our PP/TPO materials deliver an optimal balance of stiffness and impact for metal replacement; excellent surface finish for painting and chrome plating; high flow and easy processing for thin walls; and resistance to chemicals, weather, temperature extremes and UV light. To support sustainability, SABIC offers low-density PP and TPO grades that reduce material usage and landfill waste. Also, weatherable grades with molded-in color (MIC) allow OEMs to avoid the environmental impact and cost of secondary painting/coating.
SABIC engineering thermoplastics include polycarbonate (PC) blends and styrenic polymers. In automotive exteriors, GELOY™ and XENOY™ resins are suitable for MIC weatherable exterior trim, while CYCOLOY™, CYCOLAC™ and XENOY resins can be used for painted exterior trim. SABIC offers electroplating grades of CYCOLOY and CYCOLAC resin for chrome-plated applications, and mineral filled, high-modulus XENOY and CYCOLOY products for low coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) painted exteriors. SABIC’s LEXAN™ PC resin delivers outstanding impact performance and aesthetics for EV front panels.

Bumpers/Fascias and other Exterior Components
While the bumper/ fascia component contributes to the aesthetics of modern vehicles, it is primarily designed to reduce or prevent damage. The bumper/fascia has evolved from steel to aluminum to plastics over the years. Today, polypropylene/thermoplastic polyolefin (PP/TPO) grades are preferred for these applications because they provide cost-effectiveness, an attractive surface and an optimal balance of stiffness and impact. The SABIC® PPcompounds family includes next-generation TPOs with lower density and excellent flow for thin-wall bumpers that reduce weight while maintaining high impact performance.

Exterior Panels
This application segment, which encompasses body panels, doors, hoods, and other vertical and horizontal panels, is evolving as OEMs explore durable, light-weighting options. Metal, the traditional preference, is slowly being displaced by plastics, particularly PP/TPO materials and some engineering thermoplastics. In addition to weight reduction, coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) management is important to meet OEM gap and flush requirements, as is exceptional impact performance that does not sacrifice stiffness. SABIC offers many products that fit these needs, ranging from SABIC PPcompounds to mineral-filled engineering thermoplastics in the CYCOLOY and XENOY families.

Grilles
Automotive grilles have long provided functional cooling as well as styling differentiation. These exterior components often feature chrome plating of ABS (CYCOLAC) or PC/ABS (CYCOLOY) as an additional styling feature, but can use molded-in color (MIC) or painting to achieve the desired finish, Effective functional performance requires exceptional impact performance for durability and pedestrian safety. SABIC’s portfolio of engineering thermoplastics has a long history of successful use in grilles and similar exterior trim components, whether the finish is plated, painted or uses MIC.
