MILLIONS OF STEPS FORWARD IN EUROPE
Each year, employees across Europe compete to see who can take the most steps in 21 days. It’s a simple challenge that builds team spirit and wellbeing – and raises money for charitable causes.
Healthy competition can be a great motivator, as SABIC’s annual European Step Challenge proves. Employees compete either individually or collaborate in teams to take 10,000 steps or more each day over 21 days. Both the winning individual and team can make donations to a charity of their choice, with SABIC matching each donation.
During the challenge, participants use the StepSense app, which not only tracks their progress but also compares it with their peers across Europe, adding extra motivation.
StepSense can convert all sports into steps, not just walking and running, which means employees can take part in the challenge through their favorite activity.
In this year’s challenge, nearly 400 participants from eight European countries accumulated a total of over 93 million steps, equating to 80,000km – or twice round the world. Winners chose charities that supported children and the elderly, directly benefiting 1,360 people.
Charities selected in 2023 included a short-term nursery home and hospice for children.
The European Steps Challenge is a “win-win-win-win” for all participants. Charities receive donations from SABIC on behalf of the winning team. Employees win in two ways, by making a positive impact on their communities and improving their health. And everyone benefits from healthier lifestyles that improve people’s overall quality of life.
