COASTAL CLEANUP
SABIC employees in China take part in volunteering projects to remove trash from the coastline and riverbanks in their communities. In doing so, they show how individual action can be the foundation for collective change.
Globally, addressing the problem of plastic waste calls for co-ordinated action across countries and industries. Yet small-scale local initiatives have an important role to play, too. When individuals get involved, it raises awareness of the issue and shows people that by working together, they have the power to make a positive difference.
Our community cleanup projects in China put this principle into practice. In 2023, SABIC Greater China partnered with [automobile manufacturer] Hozon to organize cleanup days in four cities across China. Around 90 SABIC volunteers collected and classified 100kg of coastal waste in Shanghai and Guangzhou, improving the local environment and preventing waste from entering the ocean. Clean-ups also took place in Nansha and Chongqing.
Part of SABIC’s Global Environmental Protection Initiative, which covered 7 countries in 2022, the cleanups support the #Clean4Change initiative organized by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste. As well as creating opportunities for employees to support and connect with their local communities, these activities embody SABIC’s approach to sustainability – today, it is integrated into the way we think and act.
