Flammability Testing of EV Battery Pack Materials: Aluminum vs. STAMAX™ Resin
Stefan Weber from our electrification team is shown here holding two plates, one in aluminum and the other in STAMAX™ FR (flame retardant) resin, a long glass fiber polypropylene.
In SABIC-led testing, we exposed each plate for over five minutes to a flame with a temperature of 1,100 degrees Celsius.
As you can see, the two plates reacted very differently. The flame burned through the aluminum in 2.5 minutes. The plate in STAMAX FR resin withstood the temperature for the full five minutes with no breakthrough.
See Stefan with Dave Sullivan at The Battery Show Europe 2021, where they shared results from flammability testing and spoke to the important issue of fire shielding for EV batteries.
