ENERGY

SABIC improves the energy efficiency of operations as it works towards our 2025 sustainability goals.

This year, our global energy intensity, measured in gigajoules (GJ) of energy used per metric ton (t) of product sales, increased. Our total energy intensity reduced to 16.52 GJ per ton from 17.12 GJ per ton in 2018. This marks a 3.5 percent decrease from 2018 and a 9.48 percent reduction from our 2010 baseline. Our total energy use decreased from 799 million GJ to 776 million GJ.

A number of projects improved energy efficiency.

At our SAFCO affiliate, an advanced process control unit increased production capacity by 20 percent and improved energy efficiency.

At our Saudi Kayan affiliate, the LEAN Six Sigma DMAIC approach reduced energy intensity by 10.5 percent.

At our Petrokemya affiliate, a thorough cleaning of convection-bank furnaces reduced energy use by approximately 88,000 GJ.

Projects at our Tampico facility in Mexico reduced energy intensity by nearly 18 percent, and at our Burkville site in the United States by nearly 16,000 GJ.

At our Ibn Rushd affiliate, a next-generation catalyst reduced energy consumption per unit produced.

Due to new regulations in Saudi Arabia, some facilities are required to incinerate waste previously sold. As a result, some emissions increased.
