Interior
Many factors are affecting the design and performance of automotive interior parts such as the instrument panel, center console, steering column cover, pillar cladding, glove box and various trims. Contributing trends include proliferation of infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that require sensor, lighting and display integration; quieter operation of electric vehicles (EVs) that makes cabin noise more bothersome; consumer concerns about cleanliness and odor; the continued drive for greater sustainability; and OEMs’ reliance on aesthetics and comfort for brand differentiation
SABIC® PP compounds and engineering thermoplastics such as CYCOLAC™, CYCOLOY™ and GELOY™ resins address all these requirements. From durable molded-in color and scratch resistance for attractive aesthetics, to anti-squeak options, to expanded design freedom for part/function integration and lightweight, thin-wall geometries, SABIC’s materials and expert design guidance can help customers deliver interiors that feature high style, desirable ambiance, rich functionality and reliable performance.

Differentiated Appearance
To differentiate vehicle interiors while controlling costs, automotive OEMs are looking for materials that enhance styling and provide an upscale appearance without the need for expensive secondary operations. One strategy is to select materials with molded-in color (MIC) capability instead of polymers that require painting. Both SABIC® PPcompounds and STAMAX™ grades offer MIC capability, as well as scratch resistance to avoid the need for protective coatings. An appealing option is HAPSOFT™ PPcompounds, which feature low gloss and an attractive appearance, along with a soft tactile feel that enhances comfort and the sensation of luxury.
When materials need to be painted due to design requirements, our CYCOLAC™, CYCOLOY™, LEXAN™ and PPcompound materials offer superior paintability performance for enhanced aesthetics.

Sustainability
To help reach global targets for reduction of carbon emissions, automotive OEMs are looking for sustainable materials. SABIC has developed the first automotive grades containing mechanically recycled content within the company’s TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio of circular solutions and services. The three new resins contain up to 29 percent recycled PET and offer excellent performance similar to that of the incumbent virgin resins.

Low Emissions
To improve passenger comfort, automotive OEMs are looking for low-VOC and low-FOG materials for interior components. SABIC has a large portfolio of low-emission grades that are tested according to VDA 277 and 278 protocols.

Soft Feel
A soft, tactile feel can connote luxury and enhance comfort in automotive interiors. HAPSOFT™ PP compounds address the growing emphasis on interior comfort, which is being driven by the move to autonomous vehicles in which cabins become entertainment and relaxation centers. In addition to providing a soft-touch experience, HAPSOFT PP compounds can control costs by avoiding the need for secondary application of soft paint, foam and fabric. Applications for HAPSOFT PP compounds include steering columns, armrests, center consoles, door panels and seat cladding.

Weight Reduction
Weight reduction is a major challenge for designers of electric vehicles, whose range and performance can be affected, and internal combustion engine vehicles, whose fuel consumption and emissions depend in part on weight. Foamed aesthetic parts made with STAMAX™ resin or SABIC® PPcompound can cut weight while providing dimensional stability and other mechanical properties similar to those of solid parts. Other strategies for weight reduction include choosing lower-density materials and molding thin-wall geometries using materials that offer high flow and excellent stiffness, such as STAMAX 20YK270E resin.
