SABIC Granted First-ever UL Verification for Flame Retardancy in a Polymer Used for EV Battery Systems
03/07/2023
SABIC was recently granted a UL Verification for its STAMAX™ 30YH570 resin, a high flow, halogen free flame-retardant copolymer with 30% long glass fiber, developed for lithium-ion battery and automotive injection molded applications. STAMAX 30YH570 resin is a featured product offered under the company’s BLUEHERO™ electrification initiative.
STAMAX 30YH570 resin contains glass fibers that are chemically coupled to the polypropylene matrix, resulting in high stiffness and strength. This material has been designed to combine a good performance profile with good processing and offers a unique intumescent capability that helps with fire suppression performance.
Through a series of tests completed according to UL 2596, Test Method for Thermal and Mechanical Performance of Battery Enclosure Materials, using the thermal runaway box test, STAMAX 30YH570 withstood 250 kPa internal box pressure and 420°C maximum internal box temperature (enclosure ambient), with no rupture or perforation of the test panel. These results are based on 3 replicate tests, with panel thickness of 4mm.
BLUEHERO is breaking industry boundaries to provide cost effective, sustainable and technologically advanced solutions for the EV market by introducing plastics as a significant performance upgrade to outdated metal or steel traditionally used in internal combustion engines. The UL Verification serves as another validation of SABIC’s advances under its BLUEHERO initiative. Through the UL Verification, an objective, science-based assessment that confirms the accuracy of marketing claims, SABIC customers are provided independent, third-party validation of this product.
